Every friend of mine that comes to Thailand adores Tom Yung Kung soup, often spelt Tom Yum Goong, or even Tom Yum koong. Like Pad Thai, it's one of a few dishes that people remember and reminisce over when home. The thing is, finding an authentic tasting Tom Yum is difficult back home, even if a Thai restaurant. Tom Yum Goong is the most well-known variety of Tom Yum and makes use of shrimp (in Thai: goong or kung) as the main ingredient of the dish but you may also use firm flesh fish (see Tom Yum Taleh), chicken (see Tom Yum Gai) or mushrooms for a vegetarian version. It is not certain though if at times Tom Yam was part of the Royal Thai cuisine.
